School Break Ideas


Macaroni Kid will be at City Treehouse this Saturday at 3!

Between Presidents Day and Winter Break there are a lot of days off of school this month so be sure to check out the This Week's Picks, At the Theater and Plan Ahead sections to see which activities may require advanced ticket purchases or reservations.

If you do have school age children at home you don't want to miss the 2011 Intrepid Kids' Week. From Feb 19th to the 27th the ship will be overflowing with dynamic, hands-on exhibits plus special visits from the Circus, Star Wars & PBS characters, Broadway Show performances, Magic, Fashion shows and more.  You can find the schedule on their website.

There are some great mini-camp options throughout the month.  Super Soccer Stars has provided Macaroni Kid with an exclusive discount when you enroll for both the Presidents Day and February Break camps.  Budding chefs can participate in the Winter Break Camp at Taste Buds.  Future crime solvers can sign up for the Jr. Police Academy - Mid Winter Recess program.

This weekend you can enjoy some great music as a family with Zak Morgan at the 92Y|Tribeca, Salsa at Ideya or a Family Jamboree at The Living Room.

Sunday, February 20 - BYOK at the 92Y|Tribeca featuring 'Zak Morgan'

Cross Dr. Seuss with Shel Silverstein, toss in a smidgen of a grade school educator, a stand-up comic and a folk musician and you'll arrive at Zak Morgan. A 2004 Grammy nominee and winner of the 2003 Children's Music Web Award, Zak Morgan's albums are full of wit, whimsy and wordplay, and are fun for all ages. Morgan’s story-songs are filled with rich vocabulary and he uses music and humor as vehicles to encourage children to read books, use their imaginations and believe in themselves. He recently released his third album, The Candy Machine, in September 2010. The Candy Machine is a beautifully produced and poetic concept album for the entire family.

Sunday, February 20 - The Americana Family Jamboree

Bring the whole family for some singing and dancing at the Family Jamboree featuring Elena & Boo. The Americana Family Jamboree was born at a birthday party at The Cowgirl Hall Of Fame in NYC's West Village. When Elena and Boo saw how well the little folks responded to classic country and bluegrass music, and especially to the banjo and the mandolin, they decided to make this happening a regular thing. They offer up songs from the Americana songbook, classic tunes everyone knows or that are so much apart of our cultural landscape you will know them within a few seconds. NYICFF is offering one-week filmmaking intensives in clay-animation, stop-motion, and more, with four different classes available for ages ranging from tots to teens. Students will conceive, storyboard, write, shoot, draw, model, create sets, and perform on camera to create a completed short film, in collaboration with award-winning filmmakers. The completed films will be shown at the 2011 festival!
