Macaroni Kid
NYC Downtown
Macaroni Kid   Editions

Street Festivals, Outdoor Films & More

Summer events are in full swing and my kids are loving the concerts, water play at the playgrounds and the occasional trip to the beach.  It is going to be tough to top the 4th of July Festivities, but there are some exciting options this weekend.

Spend Friday night at Pier 46 watching The Karate Kid, the first in a series of kid friendly Flicks on Friday nights, or see The Goonies on The Intrepid.  Both films begin at sunset, but you can arrive early with your picnic basket.

Kids and adults alike will want to check out the 21 rotating ladder piece ASCENSION at Gansevoort Plaza this weekend, performances are at 3 & 5 PM.

Fun festivals this weekend include the Charlton Street Family Festival sponsored by The Children's Museum of the Arts on Saturday and Cook Out NYC on Governors Island this Sunday.

Of course NYC theater is always a great option. The Sleeping Beauty by the American Ballet Theatre will dazzle young, aspiring ballerinas and The Berenstain Bears LIVE! show is getting great reviews. Don't miss this week's giveaway:  Enter to win a family 4-pack of tickets to see The Voca People, a new intergalactic musical!

Try something new like kayaking on the Hudson or visiting the Sol LeWitt: Structures exhibition in City Hall Park. Travel to Queens for a day at The New York Hall of Science which offers great hands on exhibits plus mini golf!  It is NYC & Company's Culture Spot for July so the museum is offering one free child admission with the purchase of an adult admission as well as special family programs throughout the month.

Finish a day out in the sun with some delicious gelato or ice cream at Grom, L'Arte Del Gelato or Cones!

Have a great week!

~Jessica

Macaroni Cares: Playing it Safe in the Summer Heat

With summer in full force, many parents are excited to get – and keep – their kids outside and active. However, having kids spend hours on end in the heat can lead to heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include paleness, muscle cramps, fatigue, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea or vomiting, and fainting. The pulse rate will be fast and weak, and breathing will be fast and shallow. The skin can be cool and moist; sweating may or may not occur. If untreated, heat exhaustion may ...

Macaroni Reads: Summer Reading

Studies show that kids who read throughout the summer maintain their literacy skills at a higher level than those who do not. Having your child participate in a summer reading program will help them maintain these skills during the summer months as they are encouraged to read purely for the enjoyment of it.

Summer Reading Tips

Here are some tips on making summer reading a positive experience:

  • Help your child set a realistic book goal.
